Did you know Cannabidiol (or CBD) is only one of the 483 chemical compounds found in the hemp plant? The three most popular and used compounds of the hemp plant are CBD, CBG, and THC. And these three drugs aren’t lethal by themselves. If you’re interested in finding the right dose for yourself, we’ve already covered it here: CBD Dosage: What’s Your Ideal Dose?
In this article, we will answer some common questions like: Can you overdose on CBD? And we’ll also look deeper into some interesting studies on the effects of CBD overdose.
Can You Overdose on CBD?
No, it’s nearly impossible to overdose on CBD. And even if you consume ungodly amounts of it, you’ll only face symptoms that are short-term and easy to deal with. Some of the potential symptoms of taking too much CBD are fatigue, dry mouth, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. Note that these symptoms are mild and resolve on their own in a couple of hours!
Don’t you think the definition of “overdose” loses meaning when the ramifications aren’t too serious? For instance, you cannot overdose on sugar or water, but consuming too much sugar and water can definitely be lethal. While we know that the word “overdose” implies that we’re talking about pharmaceutical drugs, we can entertain this thought for a while.
Drinking too much water can cause water intoxication (overhydration), which could damage your brain by disrupting the activity of electrolytes. Consuming too much sugar can cause hyperglycemia, a condition where too much sugar enters your bloodstream. This could lead to lethal conditions like diabetic ketoacidosis, coma, and even death.
There are no adverse effects to consuming too much CBD, but it’s never the best option to consume more than what works for you!
Can You Overdose on THC From a CBD Product?
We always recommend that you properly research the products, where they come from, and, most importantly, how transparent the company is about their production process and ingredients.
Most low-quality CBD products contain variable amounts of THC contents (greater than 0.3%). You may even find 1:1 CBD to THC ratio in some CBD products! This inconsistency in THC levels can create problems! While an overdose isn’t lethal, it can definitely ruin your day and experience with the brand.
CBD just creates a state of homeostasis in the central nervous system (CNS), which balances out all the bodily function needed for survival and performance.
So, if you’ve ever felt paranoia, palpitation, hallucinations, nausea, vomiting, impaired thinking, and discomfort after taking a CBD product, your CBD products likely have poor quality. Mega corporations use expensive equipment and human power with little oversight, which may create a disparity in product quality.
However, The Health Bitch tackles this problem differently. Our CBD extracts come from small farms in small batches. This helps us monitor and engineer strains with the richest terpene profile! And always remember: the better the terpene profile, the better the aroma, flavor, and benefits you get for every milligram of CBD you take. Some Animal Studies on CBD
A 2019 investigation by a journal named Molecules examined the effects of high doses of CBD in mice. The researchers found that even doses over 2460 mg/kg of body weight showed no signs of toxicity. The mice, however, had a slight increase in grooming behavior and a decrease in activity levels.
The study found that even at doses of up to 2460 mg/kg of body weight; the mice did not experience any lethal effects or toxicity. However, the researchers did observe some behavioral changes in the mice, such as decreased activity levels and increased grooming behaviors.
Another 2018 study by Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research journal looked at the safety and side effects of CBD on adults. The results showed that even 1500mg of CBD per day was well-tolerated and safe to consume. In addition, Most people, on average, take 25ml of CBD per dose and can tweak it up to 100ml. So, that’s nowhere near the amount used in the study. If you’re baking with it (or using it in any dishes), you don’t have to be strict with the proportions and how much you’re eating.
One more interesting study by the Pharmacology and Pharmacy journal used mice as test subjects. They found that high doses of CBD may have some protective effects on the liver.
Conclusion
You cannot overdose on CBD unless you try very hard. Most people don’t consume more than 200ml of CBD per day. But let’s say, even if a person consumes over 1500 ml in one go, that won’t cause trouble. Additionally, while CBD is a safe drug and causes mild side effects only when consumed in enormous quantities, we still recommend you to consume just as much as your ideal dose (which is nearly 25ml for most people on average).
The benefits and effects of CBD tend to drop when you take too much or too little of it. So tweaking your dose by large numbers could waste your CBD, and we wouldn’t want that for you!
